Thank you for your reply.
Finally the problem was not the libm library. The message came from conftest 
not compiling because of the -woff 84 (Silicon specific to remove a specific 
warning I think?) flag which is not recognised by the gcc compiler. Removing 
the -woff 84 from LDFLAGS fixed the problem. I also removed the -woff 1174 from 
CFLAGS.
I then run ./configure CC=gcc F77=g77
