There is no need to do any of that, at least for the purpose of using DSSP via 
do_dssp.  All you need is the DSSP executable.  To download that, click the 
"Distribution" link in the second frame on the left-hand side of the DSSP home 
page.  That will give you the code.

Anything beyond that is probably a question for the DSSP site admins.
