Pat Brantingham told me years ago that location of a youth recreation center is an important planning decision. It should not be located next to the senior recreation center, a malicious mix of land uses. In general high schools should not be located next to parks or shopping malls.

Hi Vania - here in Philadelphia, we found that spending time near a "recreation center," which are used for a wide range of athletic and social purposes and are typically open to community members, put adolescents and young adults at risk of being assaulted. See attached.

Hi members

On behalf of a colleague here in Sweden, I would like to request your help (sorry to disturb your summer break). She wants to know:



Do football or music stadiums (multi-purpose arenas) affect crime in the surrounding areas/ in particular schools?

She is particular interested in criminological or planning literature that may indicate safety guidelines for school locations. I do think this is a very good question. There has been some evidence in the field (increase of certain types of crimes around, and effect on safety) and personally I think stadiums or shopping centers + schools is the type of "malignant mixes" that should be avoided, if possible at planning stage. I know that Marcus mentioned something about this during his visit in Stockholm.
