Please find below recent French studies regarding transit safety
perceptions. Unfortunately, most of them don't distinguish between bus and
rail.

   d'insécurité dans les transports en commun: Situations anxiogènes et

Notably, Julien Noble has conducted quantitative and qualitative studies on
this topic. According to his results, the following are related to safety
perceptions:

   - Individual characteristics, especially gender
   - Victimisation, both direct and indirect
   - Built environment, especially compartmentalisation and overcrowding
   - Social issues related to public transport:
      - Diversity of users, including threatening figures (drunk people,
      groups of young people)
      - Physical and social disorders, especially incivilities
      - Isolation, especially at night and at the end of lines
   - Operating issues related to public transport:
      - Waiting time
      - Travel time
      - Number of connections
      - Location of stops, especially in neighbourhoods and cities where
      users have to walk a long time to reach stops
